Holocaust Remembrance is Not Just For One Day  | This Juden Star was taken from the discarded garment of a concentration camp victim. | |
The Holocaust ended only 67 years ago which is still within living memory of some, and, which can be considered recent on the time scale of history. However those that survived and the other eyewitnesses to the horror such as the soldiers who liberated the camps, are now at an age where they are rapidly diminishing in number.*
The history, victims and lessons of the Holocaust will therefore only stay alive if documented, seen, constantly remembered and passed on to the next generation, despite various forces that try to stop this from occurring including those that deny the Holocaust ever occurred and that death camps like Treblinka were just "transit camps" despite overwhelming existing and hard evidence that continues to be found as late as 2012. ** Two thirds of all European Jews were killed in the Holocaust. In addition to the 6 million European and Russian Jews who were primarily targeted, an estimated 6 million others were murdered by the Nazi’s on the same basis. These included Priests, Pastors, Nuns , academics, students and other civilians, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, Gays, Lesbians, Blacks living in Germany (there were ~24,000 when Hitler came to power)**, captured US soldiers who were Jewish, looked Jewish, were Black or Mexican (who were sent to concentration camps***,****) and allied soldiers.
In addition, there were the innocent handicapped or mentally ill which Nazi progressive eugenics theory considered genetically flawed, non-contributing drains on society and therefore unfit to live, who were put to death at first by medical euthanasia and later in concentration camps with other victims of the Holocaust.**
 History and in particular the Holocaust teaches us that the line can be razor thin between a humane and morally restrained veneer of civilization, and, the inhumane and immoral acts resulting from unfettered new or previously suppressed beliefs and emotions of hatred and jealosy encouraged by governments, other organizations, geopolitical and economic events.
Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) which in English is Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day, was first established in 1953 as Israel's national memorial day to commemorate the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The recognition that millions of others were also subjected to, perished in and suffered during the Holocaust have led to Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations being widely held on an interfaith basis in many countries.
Holocaust Remembrance cannot just be for one day if the memory of the event and its victims are to stay alive and the Holocaust deniers are to be defeated.... so that this terrible episode of inhumanity and immorality never again repeats itself for persons of any race, religion, political group, sexual orientation or medical condition.
It is for this reason that this web page will remain a permanent part of our website, with the hope it helps in its own small way to educate whoever looks at it about the Holocaust.
The pictures and videos listed on this web page will be disturbing, but the Holocaust was a horrifically disturbing event in the history of what we consider recent modern civilization.

That the Holocaust occurred cannot be denied. That men who were fathers and women who were mothers themselves could kill innocent civilians so easily including mothers holding their children defies human nature. But as documented in pictures and movies the SS, Einsatzgruppen, Wehrmacht, their puppet government Eastern European allies and even participating civilians themselves took...the Holocaust is a stark reminder of what the human race is capable of...extreme evil... as well as extreme good.    The Nazi's kept meticulous records of their planning for the Holocaust which started at the Wannsee conference*****, who they rounded up, transported and killed. The volume of such captured documents in addition to pictures and film totally refutes the attempts by Holocaust deniers to lie about the existance of these actions and most of all....destroy the memory of all the innocent people who were murdered for just being Jews...including doctors, artists, musicians, farmers, professors, tradespersons, fathers, mothers and 1.3 million Jewish children, and, the millions of others who were victims for no other reason except who they were as human beings, or, what they believed in.
 The Holocaust was initiated and largely managed and perpetrated by The National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei abbreviated NSDAP), commonly known in English and history as the Nazi Party. They were aided and abetted by regular soldiers, police, government officials, ordinary civilians, financial institutions and large companies of many countries including from the U.S. who contributed directly and indirectly to the scale of the Holocaust.[6] The period of the Nazis was not just a blip in German history; the Holocaust was a Europe-wide crime. [1b], and, as more facts are revealed with time a global one including major elements in the US State Department and other sectors of the Roosevelt administration at the time, who actively blocked the immigration of Jews trying to escape what was happening in Europe. There were brave individuals who tried to help like journalist Varian Frye who saved over 2,000 Jews including such distinguished artists and intellectuals as Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Franz Werfel, Lion Feuchtwanger, and Heinrich Mann, before being expelled from France in 1941 after his covert activities angered officials of both the U.S. State Department and Vichy France.

The forces that would deny the Holocaust and the millions who died within it, are as guilty as the original perpetrators and will be judged by G_d on the same basis.
There are unfortunately already some European countries where the Holocaust can no longer be freely taught in schools due to demographic pressure from other groups who want to ignore or deny the Holocaust[1]. Increasingly there is anti Semitism and difficulty for Jewish students, organizations, speakers and courses on many major U.S. college campuses, not just those in Europe.[2]
A recent study published in 2011 indicated that 40% of US Jewish college students surveyed have experienced anti Semitism on campus.[2a]
Many books currently used in US schools and colleges are a major source of biased anti-Israeli teaching. In the 1990s study "Rewriting History in Textbooks", it was reported that eighteen of the most widely used history textbooks in American high schools were found to be "full of factual errors, oversimplification, omission, and distortion, consistently to the detriment of Jews and Israel”. This inevitably leads to the conclusion that the authors are prejudiced.…. high schools are, as far as anti-Israeli teaching is concerned, even worse than universities”. [1c]
Often, those individuals and forces who are anti Semitic hide behind the guise of just being anti Israel and claim that they are anti Zionist and not anti Semitic.
But, as Dr.Martin Luther King said: “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You are talking anti-Semitism".[3]
"Plain and Simple: Anti-Zionism Is Anti-Semitism" [4a]. There is no daylight between the anti-Zionist and the anti-Semite. A report in the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Conflict Resolution by the Yale School of Management in collaboration with its Institute for Social and Policy Studies, concludes that the statistical link between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism can no longer be denied. [4b] Jewish philosopher and theologian Emil Fackenheim has outlined three stages of anti-Semitism: “You cannot live among us as Jews,” leading to forced conversions; “You cannot live among us,” leading to mass deportations; and “You cannot live,” leading to genocide. Amnon Rubinstein, patron of the Israeli Shinui party and author of "From Herzl to Rabin: The Changing Image of Zionism", has added a fourth stage: “You cannot live in a state of your own,” which leads to boycott, divestment, sanctions, biased reporting, pro forma support of the Palestinians, and calls for the delegitimation, territorial reduction, and in some cases even the disappearance of Israel as we know it.[4c] This last step is reflected in the statements of many movements, governments, events and news headlines of today concerning Israel.
In "Why The Jews? The Reason for Anti Semitism" Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin similarly point out that: The contention that anti-Zionists are not enemies of Jews, despite the advocacy of policies that would lead to the mass murder of Jews, is, to put it as generously as possible, disingenuous. … Given, then, that if anti-Zionism realized its goal, another Jewish holocaust would take place, attempts to draw distinctions between anti-Zionism and antisemitism are simply meant to fool the naïve. [4d]
Today there is a confluence of anti Semitism coming not only from the extreme right, but also the extreme left, nationalist movements, government officials (in particular in western Europe and the Mideast), academia, prominent individuals and certain organized religions, some of it subtle, some of it overt including words and phrases reminiscent of Nazi propaganda against the Jews. One has only to look at or listen to the internet, TV, radio or newspapers as recently as November/December 2011 and even January 1 2012. [5]
The technology that exists today such as computers, cellphones, GPS, the internet, facial recognition software, biometrics, DNA testing and weapons including WMD could make the onset of another Holocaust far more rapid and horrifyingly more effective than that perpetrated by the Nazi's.  How cavalier is the Holocaust treated today in many quarters?…just 2 examples. A Munich tour company website [Jan 7 2012] has a list of numerous tours, yet placed the Dachau Memorial tour directly beneath 2 tours regarding Hitler and the 3rd Reich, both immediately below the Beer and Brewery Tour…in its own way trivializing the event. They repeat this by listing at the bottom of the webpage a category grouping “Hitler`s Munich Tour -Munich-Dachau-Memorial-concentration camp. Third Reich Tour”. [7]
 In January 2012, a gym business advertised its new location in Dubai with a picture of Auschwitz and the caption “Kiss Your Calories Goodbye”. The ad was posted to the companies Facebook page and rapidly spread via Twitter and the internet. After the Anti Defamation League (ADL) and others protested it, the ad was withdrawn with an apology from the company owner, a 32 year old anglo named European who had posted them. He said he used an image of Auschwitz to advertise weight-loss and exercise classes because "it's like a calorie concentration camp." [8a,b]
There are other instances of advertising programs using references to the Holocaust from more famous businesses based in Canada, Italy and elsewhere, including a new upscale sneaker named Zyklon (which was the gas used by the Germans to kill victims in the concentration camps). The sneaker name was changed after the company was made aware of the issue.
The passage of time, lack of education about and the trivilization of the Holocaust from several quarters all contribute to the lack of awareness and/or sensitivity that leads to such advertisements which for the most part are generated by younger generations. This hi-lites the need to increase education efforts among the next generations as the Holocaust itself increasingly becomes a distant past.
The Anti Defamation Leaque said of the above ad using a picture of Auschwitz “We are increasingly troubled by both the ignorance and mindset of a generation that appears to be so distant from a basic understanding of the Holocaust that it seems acceptable to use this horrific tragedy as a gimmick to bring attention to promoting losing weight,” “What do we have to do to educate and impart to current and future generations the perils of bigotry, racism, discrimination and anti-Semitism?” [8a]
Jews, it is often said, are the canary in the coal mine of civilization. Hence, Jews and all others need to be especially observant and on guard today against the potential of events ever again evolving to such a horror.
When Jews become the objects of savagery and hate, it means the air has been poisoned and an explosion is soon to come. When civilized nations fail to rise up against the Jew-haters in their midst, it is often just a matter of time before the Jew-haters in their midst rise up against them. [9]
This was the essence of the famous quote from Pastor Bonhoeffer during the Nazi period which is in the frame near the top of this page..."Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
Unfortunately, history could very well repeat itself as illustrated by this headline from February 6, 2012.

A personal anecdote from webmaster.....
One of my customers in the late 1970’s was a Director at a company in the Karlsruhe area near Frankfurt Germany. He knew I was Jewish based on previous discussions. On my frequent trips there, he and another manager would sometimes take me out to a local beer garden and there was much camaraderie. One day after "several rounds of beer" he told me as a young man he had been in the Nazi SS and had been an SS Panzer tank commander. As a former tank commander, he then enthusiastically talked about what great tank fighters the Israeli’s had been in the 1973 war. I asked him how he could reconcile praising the Israeli’s and spending so much time working and toasting in a beer garden with me, a Jew, given he had been in the Nazi SS. His simple, short and cold answer to it all has stayed with me ever since then, it is the story of history, and, is also a warning that all could just as easily tip to the other side of that thin razor's edge civilization exists on...what he told me without any emotion was … “that was then, this is now” ...as if nothing had happened....and then he toasted me again with his beer stein and returned to talking about work. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC has more than 170 million documents about victims of Nazi persecution, including concentration camp records and transport lists, records created by Jewish communities and US government documents about people displaced by the war who later immigrated to the United States. Once people locate information online about family members, they can request copies of the full documents from the museum. The service is free and will remain so. "This project is about restoring the identities of the victims, the people who the Nazis tried to erase. Ordinary Men In "Ordinary Men," Christopher R. Browning tells the story of the German Reserve Police Battalion 101 and in the process addresses fundamental questions about the motivations of the Holocaust's perpetrators. How did "middle-aged family men of working- and lower-middle-class background from the city of Hamburg" become calloused murderers who killed 38,000 Jews and deported 45,000 more to Nazi death camps? Anti-Semitism certainly was a central cause, Browning says: others included the urge for conformity, the desire for advancement and the fear of appearing weak. One may argue with some of Browning's conclusions, in part because he relies on postwar statements by the criminals themselves, but this book will make any reader stop to ponder the ordinary man's capacity for evil.
The Jews of Warsaw, 1939-1943 An iconic photograph from the Holocaust shows a young boy, with his hands in the air, surrounded by Jewish survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising as a German soldier trains his gun on them. Yisrael Gutman's comprehensive "The Jews of Warsaw, 1939-1943" describes the years leading up to that moment. Beginning in 1940, the Nazis concentrated Jews from the area around Warsaw in the city's Jewish quarter, which became a sort of holding pen -- where thousands would die of starvation and disease -- before they were transported to the Treblinka death camp. Between July and September 1942, more than a quarter-million Jews were shipped from Warsaw to Treblinka. In 1943, an armed revolt by the remaining 55,000 or so remaining Jews held off the Nazis for nearly a month before finally succumbing. If This Is Man One of the most effective survivor accounts of the Holocaust is Primo Levi's "If This Is Man," known to many American readers as "Survival in Auschwitz." His portrayal of the Sisyphean effort to maintain a modicum of cleanliness in Auschwitz goes a long way toward evoking the horrible filth and stench of a brutal world where the smell of burning flesh was constant. Levi shows that, among men reduced by their tormenters to living like beasts, some found ways, at least for a moment, to assert their dignity: "We still possess one power, and we must defend it with all our strength for it is the last -- the power to refuse our consent."

In September 1935, Nazi Germany passed laws that deprived German Jews of their citizenship. Without citizenship, Jews were legally defenseless. Many lost their jobs and property. Hitler also targeted with violence and persecution countless thousands of gypsies, Catholics, homosexuals, and even the physically and mentally impaired. With so many Germans fleeing their homeland, the Roosevelt State Department temporarily eased immigration quotas. In 1936, the US State Department approved visas for about 7,000 German refugees. By 1938, that number had increased to more than 20,000. But an opinion poll revealed that 82 percent of Americans still opposed admitting large numbers of Jewish refugees into the United States. One must also remember that that much anti Semitism existed in the US in the 1930’s. More than 100 anti-Semitic organizations blanketed the US with propaganda blaming Jews for all America's ills. Businesses discriminated against Jews, refusing them jobs. Signs at private beaches bore the words "No Jews or Dogs allowed" and certain hotels and housing developments proudly proclaimed themselves "Restricted." Despite pleas by American human-rights organizations, the U.S. State Department refused to increase the German quota any further. Less than a year after the United States entered the war, the Roosevelt administration confirmed that the Germans had embarked upon the systematic annihilation of Europe's Jews, and had already murdered some two million of them. In December 1942, the Allied governments released a joint statement acknowledging that the Germans were "carrying into effect Hitler's oft-repeated intention to exterminate the Jewish people of Europe." On November 25, 1942, more than three years after Hitler ignited World War II, The New York Times carried the first authenticated report that the Nazis had established a policy to exterminate the Jews. At last, on January 16, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt officially reversed the government's policy of obstruction. He signed Executive Order 9417, creating the War Refugee Board, which was instructed to "take all measures to rescue victims of enemy oppression in imminent danger of death." d. Under an agreement reached on Tuesday, Holocaust institutions will be able to access in a few months' time copies of data locked away in a quiet German town for more than 50 years. The archive contains Nazi records on the arrest, transportation, incarceration, forced labour and deaths of millions of people from the year the Nazis built their first concentration camp in 1933 to the end of the war in May 1945. It also has a vast collection of post-war records from displaced persons camps. The name index refers to 17.5 million victims. Seized by the Allies after the war, the files were closed under a 1955 agreement to protect the privacy of survivors and the reputation of the dead who may have undergone humiliating medical experiments or been falsely accused of crimes. My work on this web page which cumulatively is now over 120 hours of research, writing and uploading/programming, is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother who as a young girl bravely made the journey just with her equally young sister from what was Lithuania (now Belarus) to North America. Had she stayed in the specific village she lived in, she would have become a victim of the Holocaust as was the rest of her entire family and I would not be here.
